Does anybody know...

...what kind of pepper this is?

I got a bunch of them last week when (W)hole (of) Foods was out of jalapeños. They're roughly the same size and shape, but lighter green, crunchier, and hotter.

Whole Foods probably doesn't even know what kind of pepper that is. They're notoriously bad about labeling their produce, and since I buy peppers by look rather than by name there are times when I've gotten to the checkout counter and the cashier has asked me what kind of pepper it is and I say "I don't know" or "You tell me". There's this one girl who works checkout who whenever I've done that just tosses it into my bag and says "Okay, it's free". I don't know if that's store policy or her own personal policy, but I always try to get in her line. Maybe the store is on to her, though, because I haven't seen her working checkout much lately.

I've had that happen with coffee too. Savings of around $10 when that happens.

I forgot to mention I had a dream last night where Tom Colicchio was critiquing my catfish.

"Who had the idea for the beer-battered catfish? Did you taste the catfish? Because we all thought it was horrible."

Ha! I can just hear Tom Colicchio saying that. And then Padma would chime in with something sweetly biting, and that annoying lady from Food & Wine would agree with everything everyone else said without adding any opinion of her own....

Wait--Rob, they gave you a bag of coffee for free?

Yep. Forgot to write the code down. I offered to run back to the bin and get the code, but the cashier said, "oh, never mind" and put it in my bag. I guess they don't inventory bulk stuff that closely.

i'm going to guess jabanero, cause it's the only other pepper name that leaps to mind.

and i'm going to practice saying "you tell me"
