Spit take

Via Weingarten's chat at WaPo. This picture is from the recent National Spelling Bee.

(It took me about five seconds.)

There's something kind of beautiful about it, isn't there? It's one of those mistakes that approaches art.

Well, it took me a bit longer than five seconds to notice it. I stared at it for a minute or so and couldn't figure it out, but then hours later when I looked at it again I saw it right away.

Ballmer has long had issues with teen illiteracy, as well as issues with teen pregnancy and STDs. (I think I heard somewhere it has the highest syphilis rate in the country.) Of course I have no personal experience of any of this myself, since all the musicians and dancers I know up there are totally above that fray. But I do recall one of them telling me years ago (long before Martin O'Malley) about this campaign against illiteracy the city had going, where they put up all these signs proclaiming "Baltimore: The City That Reads". But coupling that issue with the teen pregnancy issue, that slogan quickly got mocked into "Baltimore: The City That Breeds".

So, you know spelling is not a strong suit for most illiterate peoples. Re this kid's sign, obviously the ascent of M O'M to the governorship has just exported Baltimore's problems to the state at large...

i'm just worried about myself because the reason it took me so long is i was looking for something dirty.

Actually, for a while I was thinking that it was that the shadow on the front of his shirt looks kind of like Bart Simpson.
